What types of accounts can I open through CIBC Investor's Edge?

CIBC Investor's Edge offers a wide variety of accounts to fulfill all your investing needs, including Cash, Margin, Options Trading, Self-Directed RRSPs, RRIFs, LIFs, LRIFs, In-Trust, Joint Accounts, and account services for corporations, estates and investment clubs. Are there any fees to open and maintain a CIBC Investor's Edge account?

There is no fee to open an account with us, but there may be an administration fee for maintaining an account. Please see Fees and Commissions for details.

How can I open a CIBC Investor's Edge account?

Opening a CIBC Investor's Edge account is easy and quick. Select the "Open An Account" link under the "Getting Started" section on the left of our website for details on different ways you can open an account with us.


What can I invest in?

With CIBC Investor's Edge, you have access to Canadian and U.S. stocks and options, Canadian mutual funds, GICs, treasury bills and fixed income investments, gold and silver certificates and foreign currencies (please note that some investments can only be traded through an Investment Representative over the phone).


Can I participate in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) through CIBC Investor's Edge?

Through our online IPO Information Centre, you can get information on the latest new issues available through CIBC Investor's Edge. In addition, you can indicate your interest in initial public offerings to our New Issues / IPO desk, staffed by knowledgeable representatives. Our New Issues / IPO representatives can be contacted at 1 888 300-7111 or at (416) 351-4978 in Toronto between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET. Because of high demand for certain IPOs, we may be unable to fill all requests.


What is a margin account?

A margin account is a type of account that allows investors to use the marketable securities held in their accounts as collateral for a loan to purchase more securities. A margin account brings with it certain obligations for repayment which you should be familiar with. Please see our glossary for more details on how a margin account works and speak to one of our representatives if you are interested in opening one. Our Online Credit policy also provides information on margin accounts.


How do I apply for a margin account?

Margin accounts are only available for investment accounts. If you don't have a CIBC Investor's Edge account, you may apply for margin privileges by completing a CIBC Investor's Edge Investment Account Application.

If you already have a cash investment account and wish to convert to a margin account, check the "Update an Existing Account" box on the top of CIBC Investor's Edge Investment Account Application, provide your account number and fill in the sections you need to change/update i.e., fill the section for margin account, in this case. Sign the application and mail it to us.

Before we approve request for a margin accounts, we may conduct a credit check.


Is my account with CIBC Investor's Edge protected?

CIBC Investor's Edge is a division of CIBC Investor Services Inc., a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), which provides coverage of your cash and securities up to a total of $1,000,000 for all your accounts. What is the CIBC Investor's Edge Fundbuilder™ plan and how can I participate?

The CIBC Investor's Edge Fundbuilder™ plan is a regular automatic debit from your bank account (CIBC or another financial institution) into your CIBC Investor's Edge investment or retirement account. The cash can be deposited into your CIBC Investor's Edge account or can be used to purchase units in either CIBC or third-party mutual funds (some fund companies do not provide regular investment plans). The automatic debits can occur on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annual basis. The minimum investment can be as low as $25 (for cash plans), and $100 for CIBC or mutual funds (unless, a higher minimum is set by the applicable mutual fund company). What is the CIBC Investor's Edge Sharebuilder™ plan and how can I participate?

With CIBC Investor's Edge ShareBuilder™ plan, dividends on hundreds of eligible Canadian and American stocks can be automatically reinvested into additional, whole shares. There are no reinvestment commissions or processing fees to pay. All that's required to participate is that your eligible stock's dividend payout is sufficient to purchase at least one whole additional share (dividends cannot be reinvested into partial shares). Employees of CIBC Investor's Edge do not provide advice or give an opinion on investments available through CIBC Investor's Edge. However, these representatives are here to help and can answer all your questions on the products and services we offer. They can also provide current information to help you make your own informed investment decisions.


Is the CIBC Investor's Edge service only accessible through my computer?

Most of the features of CIBC Investor's Edge are available through our website. However, you may access your accounts and place trades by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week by using our automated touch-tone phone service. You can also speak, with a CIBC Investor's Edge representative during our regular business hours.
